An exceptional destination for wildlife and nature lovers

Nestled in the heart of the cloud forest, our private reserve spans 80 hectares of protected land teeming with extraordinary biodiversity. Towering oaks, crystalline rivers, four waterfalls, and traces of ancient fossils await along five scenic hiking trails that invite exploration and wonder.

Paraíso Quetzal Lodge was founded in 2005 by the Serrano Salazar family, driven by a vision to create a place where conservation, hospitality, and adventure could thrive in harmony. Inspired by the forest’s mystique and majesty, they opened their home to nature lovers from around the world.

Since then, we have grown with a deep and unwavering commitment—to preserve this fragile ecosystem, support our local community, and offer each guest an authentic, enriching, and transformative experience.

Where the mountains meet the mist

We are located at 2,600 meters above sea level in Cerro Buena Vista, between Tapantí National Park and Los Quetzales National Park. This privileged location, in the heart of Costa Rica’s cloud forest, is just two hours south of San José and makes Paraíso Quetzal Lodge an exceptional haven for endemic bird and plant species.

Surrounded by lush forest and tranquil landscapes, our lodge is a refuge for those seeking to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re here for birdwatching, photography, or a peaceful getaway, our remote setting offers the ideal environment.

You can reach us:

Via Private Vehicle: The road is suitable for all vehicles, with no need for four-wheel drive.

Or via public transportation on the Musoc line from San José to Pérez Zeledón — simply ask to get off at Kilometer 70 on the Inter-American Highway South.

OUR TRAILS

Five Trails, a Thousand Stories to Discover

Wandering our trails means stepping into a forest of ancient oak trees draped in moss, lichens, and epiphytes. Towering among them are majestic mountain cypresses—one of which is over 1,000 years old.

Our network of five trails leads to crystal-clear rivers, four waterfalls, million-year-old fossils, and even the remains of a small plane crash. Along the way, you may see centennial trees, highland birds, and—if you're lucky—tracks or sightings of the elusive tapir, one of the most iconic mammals in this region.

Self-guided trail access is included with your overnight stay or One-Day Pass.

A Hummingbird Paradise

Around the restaurant and bungalows, we’ve cultivated a garden designed for you to enjoy the flight of hummingbirds and the panoramic view of the Talamanca forest. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a resplendent quetzal.

This space invites quiet contemplation and is a favorite among nature photography enthusiasts, with flowers carefully selected to attract birds and inspire tranquility.

Our Commitment to Conservation

"From the very beginning, Paraíso Quetzal Lodge has believed that protecting biodiversity is a core part of our mission. That’s why we support initiatives that promote the conservation of the cloud forest and its emblematic species, such as the resplendent quetzal and the Baird’s tapir. With every visit, you become part of this effort too"

Serrano Family

from words to actions

Our commitment goes beyond offering a tourist experience: we actively support projects that promote the conservation of key species and habitats in the Talamanca mountain range.
